Wills and Legacies

A legacy is probably the most important gift you can give to The Encephalitis Society. Although it won't cost you anything during your lifetime, your bequest will ensure that the Society can be there to support people affected by Encephalitis long into the future. What's more, because a charitable bequest is not subject to inheritance tax, leaving a legacy to the Charity is an excellent way to avoid much of your Estate being swallowed up by tax.

It's easy to include The Encephalitis Society in your will, but you should always consult a professional such as a solicitor or financial adviser to be sure your will reflects your exact intentions and you understand the tax implications.

Complimentary Will Writing Service

What is this service?

The Encephalitis Society in conjunction with Moore Blatch Solicitors are offering to all Society Members who live in England and Wales* a complimentary (free) Will Writing Service.

Drawing up a will can be worrying and expensive, and all too often it is easy for us to put it off to another day. However those affected by Encephalitis and their families usually know all too well the importance of writing a will and unfortunately in some cases the implications and reality of not having done so.

The partnership between the Society and Moore Blatch means all our Members who do not currently have a will or who wish to change their will are entitled to a basic will free of charge worth approximately £250 plus VAT (or in the case of a couple, mirror wills worth approximately £450 plus VAT). If you have more complicated arrangements to make then you will receive these amounts respectively off the total cost of your will.

Having a will means you can make provision for your family, explain exactly what your wishes are in the event of your death in relation to your possessions and property, and decide who you want to carry out those instructions. You might also decide to leave a charitable bequest. It would be naive of the Society, in light of our offering this service, to suggest we had not hoped you might consider The Encephalitis Society in some small way.

*Unfortunately we are unable to offer this service yet to our Scottish, Irish Members or International Members.

What is a charitable bequest?

A charitable bequest is a gift made in a will of, usually, either money or property, to a charitable organisation.

There are three types of legacy that you can leave:

  • A residuary legacy – where you leave a share of your estate.
  • A pecuniary legacy – where you leave a fixed sum of money as a gift.
  • A specific legacy – where you leave an item as a gift.

Encephalitis is unfortunately unlikely to diminish.

If you leave us a legacy, your gift will help us to:

  • Continue to reach out to those most in need via our support service.
  • Broaden our Regional Representative Scheme meaning there is a listening ear in your local area.
  • Continue our work with health, social care and education professionals so they know what to do when faced with Encephalitis and how best to help those who survive.
  • Continue to support and participate in vital research with our academic and clinical colleagues.

By leaving a legacy to The Encephalitis Society you will be ensuring we can continue our vital work in improving the quality of life of all people affected.
