Family Weekend 2013

The Encephalitis Society has again been supported by Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity, The Adamson Trust, The Dorothy Palmer Smith Trust, The Big Lottery, D’Oyly Carte Charitable Trust and The Hedley Foundation enabling us to once again provide our Members with the opportunity to attend our ‘Family Weekend’. This opportunity enabled 15 families affected by Encephalitis, including 31 children to get together in a safe environment to try new things and make new friends.

Fifteen families enjoyed a wide range of challenging & inspiring activities including raft building, caving, weasling and high ropes. The children took part in outdoor activity sessions twice a day on Saturday and Sunday. The adults had the option of listening to external speakers in the morning and participating in outdoor activities in the afternoons. Children’s entertainment was put on in the evening, with games, films and on the Saturday evening a Magician.

The weekend not only provides an opportunity for families to connect but also to create friendships between families for ongoing support. The Encephalitis Society has found that this is of vital importance to our Members. The weekend provides a fun and understanding environment for families to come together and share experiences whilst also challenging themselves. The design of the weekend to accommodate outdoor activities encourages an active lifestyle and the rehabilitative benefits of exercise and group outdoor activities. A lot of the skills gained over the weekend are transferable, such as communication skills and team-working, which will help with further education and employment.

The weekend makes such a difference to the lives of those that attend, and we as a Society are honoured to work with these families and these weekends help re-energise the staff and our volunteers, knowing we that we are making a real difference in so many people’s lives.

“My family has been able to share others experience of living through and with Encephalitis, it gives us a new understanding and appreciation of life”

“Overall we had the most wonderful weekend, we’ve all made new friends and met with old ones, the kids have had the opportunity to do things they wouldn’t have done otherwise”
